The Centre for Positron Emission Tomography has been operational within the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne Australia since 1992.

Austin Hospital Orientated PET History
  • The Centre for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) at the Austin Hospital was established in 1990 as a joint initiative of the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments, and the Austin Hospital.

  • The Centre for PET was developed as a National Centre for basic and clinical research in view of the unique facilities and expertise available within the Centre. The Centre for PET commenced operation in July 1992, performing the first PET scan in Australia. There are now approximately 3,000 clinical and research PET studies performed in the Centre for PET each year.

  • As part of the clinical evaluation of PET at the Austin Hospital, prospective protocols were initiated in cardiac, neurology and cancer patients. Data from these evaluations has been published regularly in clinical peer-reviewed journals.
